recently i commented on a facebook friend’s post regarding their child’s education, specifically the learning of a second language. now, school and experience tells me that speaking (or learning) a second language increasesbrain development.
"The software of the brain, like the software of desktop computers, harnesses the exceptional processing capacity of the brain in the service of specialized functions, like vision, smell, and language. All individuals have to acquire or develop their own software in order to harness the processing power of the brain with which they are born." http://www.cal.org/resources/digest/0012brain.html
now, picture this scenario: the salmon-crunching nate who ravenously pukuks(sucking meat clinging to bones—kinda like peeps cleaning chicken bones) their salmon plates and bowls of seal soup and conversing (with slurps of saliva in between sentences) in both Yup’ik and English at the dinner table, with a mouth full of food, is smarterthan you perceive them to be (salmon and seal, as you know, are both rich in omega 3 fatty acids, which are great for the heart and brain).
(i am a salmon-cruncher. i love seal soup, with a dash of seal oil. i speak both Engliss and Yup’ik. i’d like to think i’m smarter than the average bear.)
promote a child’s learning of a second language. learn a second language yourself. speak Yup’ik. ;)
