eskimo power

Instagram this is a peek into the life of a yup'ik eskimo hunter. i have a conscience--don't get me wrong, but sometimes i operate without one. crazy? maybe. blood thirsty savage? most definitely.

i’m about to build a maqi here outside our house in kotzebue.  i’m actually getting pretty excited thinking about building one.  my wife and i need to maqi.  more people are in need of maqis here in inupiaq country!

back in yup’ik country, maqi stoves are usually made from 55 gallon drums.  i plan to have a yup’ik-style stove for my maqi.  i still have yet to get some rocks for my maqi though—not sure what i’m going to use.

my sister, who lives in wasilla, has a maqi.  i’m not sure where she got her stove from.

i’ll be sure to post pics of my maqi building process.

maqi is short for maqivik, a yup’ik word for sauna, by the way.
